1946 is the birth year for House of Dior. This is the year when Christian Dior, financially backed by Marcel Boussac opened a new couture house that quickly became a successful textile business, and spawned the birth of a legend.

After the death of Christian Dior in 1957, Yves Saint Laurent was placed in the position of Artistic Director, and his collections, much lighter, softer and easier to wear made him a French national hero. However, his daring collections – including the 1960’s Beat Look, were not accepted by the management so in 1960 he was replaced by Marc Bohan, who has a more conservative style – that was easily seen in his collections.

After Boussac group filed for bankruptcy in 1978 the House was purchased by Willot Group. In 1981, the Willot Group filed for bankruptcy, and French business man Bernard Arnault purchased Dior for the “one symbolic franc” in 1984. This was the beginning of new era.

21st century Dior

The 21st century saw a lot of chances in the better for Dior. In 2001 Dior Homme collection was launched detailing a new contemporary masculine concept, and the 30 Avenue Montaigne Dior Homme boutique was opened. By 2002 over 130 boutiques were in full operation.

2001 was also the year when men’s fragrance “Higher” was released, only to be followed by the launch of “Addict” in 2002 and “Dior Homme” and “Miss Dior Cherie” in 2005.

2001 was also a year of importance in the accessories line of Dior, with launch of the “Chris 47 Aluminum” line that marked a new era in Dior watch design. “Riva” and “Malice” watches were redesigned to create the “Riva Sparkling” and “Malice Sparkling” spin-off collections. Other highly appreciated watches were the “Le D de Dior” and “Chiffre Rouge” and “La Baby de Dior”.
