In 1940, three times Wimbledon Champion Fred Perry was approached by Austrian ex- footballer Tibby Wegner who had a marketing idea for what would later become the world’s first sweatband. Fred Perry usually wore gauze wrapped around his wrist to protect from perspiration the racquet handle, and Wegner’s idea immediately appealed to him.
The first sweatband was made from bath towel material and was very heavy and thick, but the re-designed prototype was pliable, soft and light, and they marketed it by giving it away to top players at the best tournaments. This is how Fred Perry Sportswear was launched.
Not long after, Fred Perry polo shirts were designed, and the famous laurel logo was created. Even today, this logo is associated with Wimbledon and with the world’s finest players. Initially, Fred Perry used the same marketing strategy, giving away polos to top players in top tournaments, but the pressure from street-wear fans made the company to add stocking, collars and sleeves. This is when the first crossover brand from sportswear to street-wear was born, and that brand was Fred Perry Clothing.
Fred perry Today
Today, Fred Perry is a well known brand, that offers men and women clothing, limited edition lines, footwear, bags, and accessories. Fred Perry Clothing is now owned by a Japanese corporation, but the same high-quality sportswear and street-wear is delivered, making it a luxurious yet discrete brand that is well known and appreciated among connoisseurs.
In 2009 Fred Perry Clothing received a surge in interest and popularity when the brand sponsored up and coming Scottish tennis player Andy Murray. Many British rock and pop stars were shortly after spotted proudly wearing this label, including Blur and Gwen Stefani.
Even if the brand has history of over 50 years, Fred Perry’s style remained true to its original style and has the same traditional looks that made it a world renowned brand for the last half century. However, this doesn’t mean that the brand is closed to collaboration, Raf Simons being a fine example of a successful collaboration that led to stunning contemporary takes on the traditional Fred Perry Clothing style.
Fred Perry Clothing is a favorite in its native UK, but also in the United States and Japan, and Fred Perry Polo shirts are known, worn and loved all throughout the globe. Easy recognizable by the laurel logo design and the use of color around the hems, Fred Perry offers a unique look, that blends the traditional Fred Perry clothing design with today.
